C.A.R.P. fears milk price will rise
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, June 6. The conclusion drawn by a delegation of housewives and trade union representatives who met the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) on Saturday in Auckland, was that the subsidy would come off milk in the Budget on Thursday, said Mrs E. Ayo, secretary of the Campaign Against Rising Prices, today.
Although Mr Muldoon had dedined to answer the question directly, it was felt that if the lifting of the subsidy was not in the Budget he would have made some comment, she said.
The retail price of milk is expected to rise to 6c or 7c a pint if the subsidy is removed.
“We did not get anything from him,” she said. “He would not commit himself whether it would take place or not. We made a strong protest. “Should the subsidy be removed and the price go up we asked whether he would be prepared to increase family benefits, raise old-age pensions, or reinstate milk for schools,” said Mrs Ayo. “All we can do is wait for
the Budget. I think the only thing we can do then is to press for the rescinding of the lifting of the subsidy. Barring that, we will press for the other points I have mentioned.” Included in the delegation’s dozen members were Mrs G. Barker, a representa-
' tive of the National Council >of Housewives* Association, : the president of the Carpen- . ters’ Union (Mr J. Gillies), ; and other members of s CA.R.P. “There would have been ■ more but there was a mix-up : in the time and place of the ■ meeting,” Mrs Ayo said.
