RAIL FARE RISES
Confusion explained Comments about rail-fare increases made in “The Press” on Saturday by the assistant secretary of the Lyttelton Waterside Workers’ Union and president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Federation (Mr R. K. Fergus) were “completely correct,” the district traffic manager of railways (Mr A. p. Campbell) said last even-
ing. Mr Fergus had challenged a reported statement by Mr Campbell that long-distance rail fares had been increased by 25 per cent, and suburbanline fares by only 10 per cent. Confusion had arisen because a statement he made had been misreported, Mr Campbell said. ■ “In fact, the local fares—in the suburban areas—have gone up by 25 per cent, and the long-distance fares by 10 per cent This is the statement that I made at the time, but the report published— not in “The Press’—reversed these figures,” Mr Campbell said.
