Mariner on new course
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PASADENA (California), June 6 A short rocket firing has shifted Mariner 9 on to a slightly faster course to Mars, lining It up for a swing into orbit of the planet a .day earlier than first planned.
The satellite now is expected to reach Mars on November 13, sweep within 750 miles of the Martian surface and begin three months of mapping and surveillance that might reveal new evidence on the possibility of life existing on the planet.
Mariner 9, launched on May 30, was 838,000 miles from Earth and heading towards Mars at 6383 miles an hour when its computer, controlled by radio from the control centre In Pasadena, fired the spacecraft’s small rocket engine for 5.11 seconds.
