Soviet view of Cairo reshuffle
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MOSCOW, June 6. The Soviet Union had described Egypt’s recent Government reshuffle as “a purely internal event having no effect on Russian-Egyptian friendship.” A belated commentary in the Communist newspaper “Pravda,” yesterday denounced as provocative Western efforts to present the political upheaval as “a clash of pro-Western forces in Egypt which would disunite Cairo and Moscow.”
“The 15-year treaty signed by Egypt and the Soviet Union in Cairo last week proved that the widespread dismissals by President Sadat had no ilbeffect on Russian-Egyptian ties,” the “Pravda” commentary said. This was the first official Soviet Union reaction to what some reports have described as Egypt’s worst political crisis since the death of Colonel Nasser.
