Two sides unbeaten in badminton
Mairehau I, the present champion, and Lincoln Cellego remain unbeaten after the fourth round of the Canterbury A grade Inter-club badminton championship was completed at the Skollerup Hall on Saturday. Mairehau I had an 8-0 win over RaUway the team which forced it into the runner-up position in several championships preceding last season. Lincoln College too did not receive the strong opposition it mltht have expected from Canterbury, beating that team 7-1. Mairehau I and Lincoln College will not meet untU the seventh
and last round on Saturday, July 24, so that a virtual grand final’’ appears Imminent. Other teams to win were North Beach and Knox, which beat Mairehau II and University respectively. Undoubtedly the most outstanding encounter on Saturday, amongst matches which were generaUy clear-cut throughout the day, was that fought out In the top men’s singles between G. Ellis (Canterbury) and D. Yoong (Lincoln). After a total of three games, which lasted for more than an hour, Yoong won, 14-17 15-3, 17-14, and reinforced his position as No. 2 in the representative division I team, ahead of EUs, who Is the NO. The match was highlighted by some long, hard rallies, with Yoong regularly halting Ellis with some clever cross-court drop shots.. Ellis led the first game 14-10, allowed Yoong to draw level and then took the next three points in setting to win. Yoong won the second game easily as Elis "rested” for the vital third
game. Yoong reversed the result of the first game when he led 14-10, allowed lus opponent to level the scores and then won the necessary points. J. Lang gained Canterbury’s only win when he beat Hamid Nassir, 15-4, 7-15, 15-6. Canterbury was weakened by the absence of Its top woman player, Miss B. Hall, and had to use Mrs A. K. Smith In the top position and an A reserve player, Mrs S. Fox, in the second position. While Mrs Smith would have provided Mrs K. Lean, Lincoln College's second woman, with steady opposition, she was no match for the provincial champion, Miss J. Miles. While Mairehau I was not troubled to beat Its former great rival, Railway, the experienced Mrs M. Miller almost caused an upset against the provincial championship runner-up last season, Miss F. Inglis. Mrs Miller led Miss Inglis, 10-6, In the first game, and also made a good start in the second game. However, she was unable to gain the remaining points and lost the match 12-10, 12-9. The experience of J. Findlay and Mrs Miller also proved a stiff hurdle for P. V. Boatwood and Miss Inglis to overcome In the mixed doubles, the Railway pair taking the first game but conceding the later two. The Canterbury junior champion 14-year-old, Miss A. Roas (North Beach) completed one of her finest wins to date when she outclassed the provincial division I representative, Miss G. Hampton (Mairehau ID. After a slow beginning, Miss Ross improved her tootwork and the length of her clearing shots to beat Miss Hampton, 115, 11-6. North Beach’s other woman player, Mrs L. Bassett, had an unexpectedly easy win over Mrs S. Stead. The steadily improving Knox team had a comfortable 7-1 win over University. The students
Srovlded the strongest opposition i the women's singles matches, where Mesdames R. Moran and J. Ling both took games off Misses S. Field and G. Mathers.
