Th* champlsmhlp iMdara, TechniCil and Sacred Heart, proved too atrong tor their opponent* when th* third round of the Inter-club netbell competition we* played In Mill end >unny condition* at th* Hagley court* on Saturday.
Technical was too strong for Teachers’ CoUege A and Sacred Heart recorded the most comfortable of win* over Teachers’ B. New Brighton won easily from Technical B, while In the most evenly-contested match of the day Riccarton beat Hagley by the narrow margin of two goals. Over all, however, games ofd n fb S^ ro^uce a '’***' B^an<^ Result* were:— Technical 47, Teachers' College A 21. Ucred Heart 34, Teachers' College B 19. Riccarton 27, Hagley 25. N«* 4 Brighton 39, Technical B Point* after the third round: Sacred Heart and Technical 6 point*, New Brighton and Riccarton 4. Teachers’ College A and B 2, Hagley, Technical B 0. Technical A 47, Teachers' CoUege A 21
College took an early lead of two goals, but Technical quickly challenged and took over the lead. For College, D. Barnett, goal attack, and J. Hughey, goal shooter, combined well In the circle but had to work hard against the pressing defence tactics of Burney and S. Rogers. The College feeders seemed to misjudge the reach of Technical’s defences to give them many easy interceptions. As usual, Technical’s positional play was of a high standard, with S. Langrope controlling the centre court and S. Ruffle feeding the shooters continuously. However, Its forwards were not
as accurate as usual and the half-time score should have been higher in Technical’s favour. The scoring was slow well into the second half, with neither side finding the goal with accuracy. M. Garty and J. Lichfield defended and rebounded well for College and made the Technical forward line work hard for the ball. Technical increased its pressure, taking control of the game to win. Sacred Heart 56, Teachers' College B 19 Sacred Heart assumed complete dominance over the College team and had scored 20 goals before College shot its first one. The Sacred Heart defence played with authority and vigour, with B. Walker and S. Mene taking some magnificent interceptions. Against such tactics, W. Hattersly tried desperately to co-ordinate her College team but without success. With no incentive Sacred Heart relaxed the pressure and Col-
lege capitalised to score some quick goals with good shots by C. Townley. P. Beban, th* Sacred Heart centre, defended tenaciously throughout the court, taking some good Interceptions and bringing the ball clearly through the court for her forwards, E. Price and J. Harnett, to score continuously. . In spite of Its Inexperience, College played and defended courageously but could make no impression on Sacred Heart’s mounting score. Riccarton 27, Hagley 25 These teams looked evenly matched in the opening Stages, both sides scoring goal for goal. L. Urin, for Riccarton, played her usual strong game end made her opposite number, L. Dawson, work hard for passe* in the circle. S. Marks covered a lot of ground In the centre and forward court* and it was mainly through her efforts that Hagley managed to stay with Riccarton at half time.
Although Riccarton looked slightly superior. It locked a definite pattern of play with forward players caught out of position up court on some occasions. If Riccarton could Improve its positional play ft would prove a challenge to the leading teams as Its players have tremendous potential and natural ability. K. Haughey held her position at wing attack steadily and fed the shooters well and it was through her efforts, coupled with strong defence by L. Urin, that Riccarton took control of the game in the latter stages. The final score Indicated the closeness of the game. New Brighton 39, Technical B 14 The bustling tactics of the Brighton defence line upset the Technical forward third and ft took them quite some time to penetrate the circle. When th* ball did reach th* goal Technical’s D. Tetal shot with the competence for which she la wellknown. Brighton controlled the game with purposeful play, employing fine tactical movements throughout the court, to take the lead at half-time, 23-6. For Technical, C. Wood guarded well against her more experienced opponent. M. Herring, who often had to employ a quick dodge to clear herself for a pass. J. Blair played her usual steady game, feeding the forwards with continual service. A. Davies controlled the centre snd forward courts with her experienced play and feeding to the circle, but Brighton proved too superior In experience and ran out an easy winner.
