"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. The pity that Foxrangi is not in the Great Northern Steeplechase was emphasised again when he ran away with, the Waikato Steeplechase at Te Rapa on Saturday. The big race had other saddening aspects with Marco Lass destroyed because of injury and Kimberlite so sore afterwards that her prospects of getting to Ellerslie seemed pretty bleak.
His dislike of right handed racing, even though he won the Maramarua Hunt Cup at Paeroa this time last year, was the cause of Foxrangi not being entered for the Great Northern meeting. He was one of the failures of the Pakuranga Hunt Cup, over three miles of the Great Northern course, last August, and has always looked better the Te Rapa way around.
On Saturday he ran second behind Proud Vai for the best part of two miles and a half and, when the leader landed awkwardly from the next jump, was all ready to challenge for the lead.
Proud Vai, to all appearances hurt in some way, hung on gamely until the last fence then dropped back quickly and was passed by Sentry, Macquarrie and Jim Doolan.
Foxrangi was out on his own past the post and Sentry, with remarkable spirit after being so long under heavy pressure, beat Macquarrie by a couple of lengths for second.
Proud Vai was very stiff in his hindquarters as he came back to scale and Kimberlite, after tailing the 12 finishers, also limped back, looking very much the worse for wear.
Success for N.Z. rider (N.Z. Press Association) ADELAIDE. The former New Zealand jockey, R. Sutherland, has found Adelaide another happy hunting ground, having won five races in six days. He won a race at Morphetvllle on Monday, a treble at Murray Bridge on Wednesday and the principle event, the Pullman Handicap, on Au ram Boy at Cheltenham on Saturday. After having ridden many winners in New Zealand, Sutherland transferred to Victoria five years ago and linked up with Bendigo trainer, G. Daniels. For him he won 60 races.
