Dangers for drivers
CN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 51. The biggest part of the increase in road accidents during the winter months occurred in built-up areas, the Chief Traffic Superintendent for the Ministry of Transport (Mr D. FT Ross) said today. Last year’s accident figures showed a significant increase in accidents in 30 m.p.h. areas, and when coupled with the increase in intersection accidents, it became clear that the major winter problem was at crossroads in built-up areas, he said. The main reasons were reduced visibility in poor light and weather greater use of headlights would cure that and the speed of vehicles. The Ministry’s Chief Traffic Engineer (Mr M. R. Palmer) said the reports seemed to indicate that drivers udjd not make sufficient allowance for adverse weather. & was likely that drivers in winter did not realise how much their vision had been reduced.
