EXPLOSIVE SITUATION.—The British freighter Beechbank, smoke pouring from a fire in a hold, about to be towed up Sydney Harbour. For 12 tense hours the ship, with a hold full of explosive gas, lay in the harbour, a huge potential bomb. Fortunately, chemicals in an adjoining hold did not ignite. After it was considered safe to do so, thousands of gallons of water were poured into the hold and the fire was put out.
