International Press Institute aid sought
(N Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) SINGAPORE, May 21. The managing director of the “Singapore Herald” (Mr J. J. Hahn) has appealed to the Zurich-based International Press Institute for urgent financial support tb keep the newspaper going.
The newspaper has had served on it a letter of demand to repay debts to the Chase Manhattan Bank or go into receivership. Mr Hahn asked, the LPT to stop the Singapore Government from closing down the newspaper pending an impartial investigation. Mr Hahn said he was hoping to hear later today from the I.P.L’s executive chairman (Miss S. Aw Sian) of Hong Kong. Miss Aw has invested about SNZISO,OOO in ’ the “Singapore Herald.” -Mr Lee has shown a press conference a signed statement from her
saying she would not put any more money into the newspaper. In a front-page editorial today, the English-language newspaper, called for an independent commission of inquiry to decide. whether it was involved in subversive operations. The Prime Minister of Singapore (Mr Lee Kuan Yew) in a speech on “black operations” (the Government’s term for subversive action mounted from outside the republic) referred to three newspapers—the "Singapore Herald,” the “Eastern Sun” and the Chinese-language daily “Nanyang Siang Pau.”
