Factory effluents
Sir, —Now that the purpose of the new Christchurch premises for Julius Schmid, Inc., is known the manufacture of contraceptives from lambs' intestines, exclusively for the American market we once again find cause for concern that New Zealand is being further polluted. The drain which has been laid across Ferry Road from this factory appears to discharge into the Heathcote River and will doubtless carry effluent from this industry to aggravate the pollution problem in this neglected stretch of river. It is bad enough that our own industries are permitted to foul our land, but to allow an overseas company to use this country as a dumping ground is too great a price to pay.— Yours, etc., LETTRE. McWilliam) replies: “Trade wastes from the factory concerned are discharged to the sewer in Ferry Road and not to the Heathcote River. The pipe crossing Ferry Road and discharging to the Heathcote River is for stormwater drainage, and does not discharge any trade wastes to the river-”]
