Spectators at fires

Sir,—l have no doubt at all that “For The People” and his family were innocent and unobtrusive spectators of the ■ Deans Avenue fire, but I do deplore the sentiment that interprets curiosity as intelligent interest. Some years ago a large house within 50 yards of ours caught fire, and almost immediately we had a swarm of excited children running up our two adjacent drives and over our flower beds, jostling each other for a really good gawp. On that occasion, too, the police had to control the spectators while the firemen magnificently saved the house from destruction with about five minutes to spare. The search for drama and sensation is . inherent in crowds in every ’ country, but it is not a trait .to defend or encourage.— Yours, etc., I.S.T. May 21, 1971. l
