Hockey goals
A general improvement in the attacking ability of forward lines has been noted in senior hockey teams, in the club matches played so far this season. Evidence of this is shown in the number of goals scored in the 20 competition matches played to date. After five rounds a total of 93 goals have been scored at an average of 4.65 a match while at the same stage last year only 69 goals had been scored at an average of 3.45. University, which heads the table with 4| points has scored 28 goals already this season and has conceded only two. Last year it also headed the table after five rounds with the same number of points but had scored 10 goals fewer and conceded five. Admittedly University’s goal aggregate was helped considerably by its mammoth 17-0 win against Selwyn in the fourth round However, High School Old Boys who share the lead with University, have also made a much better start to the season than they did last year. They managed to score only eight goals in the first five games last year and conceded five but this season have notched 19 goals and conceded only three. Two interesting factors emerge with the comparison of this season’s and last season’s points and goals tables after the five rounds. Harewood-Bumside, at the bottom with one point after five games last year, having scored five goals and conceded 10, has improved to fourth position this season while scoring 10 goals and conceding five. The other feature is the consistency of the young Linwood Old Boys team. It seldom gained the limelight but at the same time is a talented side capable of a major upset, j.. _ _ ' .
