ITALIAN FINAL

Laver wins in 3 sets

(N.Z PA.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME.

The Australian A. R. Laver yesterday beat J. Kodes (Czechoslovakia) in straight sets to win the men’s singles title in the Italian open tennis championships. The victory raised Laver’s earnings this year to well over $200,000, as he picked up the $lO,OOO first prize after beating the unseeded Czech, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3.

Kodes played a fine attacking game and succeeded in breaking three of Laver’s services, but finally the 32-year-old Australian found an answer to Kodes’s tactics and an irresistible reportoire of passing shots, volleys smashes and drop shots finally gained him control.

In the women’s final, the British top seed, Miss V. Wade, secured her first major international title on clay courts when she beat Miss H. Masthoff Niessen, the West German No. 1. 6-4, 6-4.
