Food factory to close
<N.Z. Preu AeioctaUon) UMARU, May 11. The Studholme factory of Food Processors, Ltd, will soon close and be used only for storage. The firm says it is closing because of an unreasonable stand by the Waimate County Council. The firm’s plant will be shifted to Christchurch to be
used in a merger with
another company. The -council earlier this year gave Food Processors 90 days to stop discharging offensive effluent into the Waimate Creek. Mr C. J. Skeggs, a director of the company, said today that the South Canterbury Regional Water Board last year gave the factory permission to discharge up to 480,000 gallons of effluent a day into the creek until March, 1973, plus another year if the firm promised to
i have a pipeline to the sea within that time. The factory has employed about 50 persons part of the year, and about 15 at other times. Mr Skeggs said that staff would be offered employment in Christchurch. Mr Skeggs refused to name the company in Christchurch with which Food Processors is merging. The shifting of the plant from Studholme would begin this month and conclude possibly at the end of July or early August, he said.
