Problems with tax

The District Commissioner of Taxes (Mr C. K. Jones) believes that many Government and local body employees will delay submitting returns for last year because they owe the Inland Revenue Department some money.

He said yesterday that many such employees had received retrospective payments during the last financial year but had only been taxed at the rate of 23c in the dollar.

This meant that many would find they owed money. It would, however, be no advantage to such people to delay filing a return.

The department did not expect payment of additional amounts of tax until March 7, 1972. Mr Jones said that everyone earning more than $2600 a year had to file a return. Those earning less could please themselves provided they filed the correct tax code. Since the end of the last financial year the department had received 30,000 returns and expected at least another 60,000. Returns are now coming in at the rate of up to wWv a wOvK Due rccofiCJUßtion statements from employers have been slow All 13,500 statements are due by next Monday but only 5000 have come in so far.
