Another win for “Civilisation”
8.8.C.'s series '“Civilisation" has been awarded the 1971 George Foster Peabody Television Award. The award was accepted for the 1 8.8. C. by David Webster, their United States representative, and Kenneth Macmillan, a member of the programme’s production team, who is in America at present; shooting for the new 8.8. C. 1 series on the history of America, written and narrated by Alistair Cooke, a previous Peabody award winner. The citation says that “. . . viewers on both sides of the Atlantic have been refreshed by a gloriously intelligent celebration of man’s accomplishments . . . written and narrated with wit, style and passion by Kenneth Clark."
The George Foster Peabody Awards are given annually to television and radio programmes, stations, networks and individuals. Other Peabody awards won by the 8.8. C. have been for “An Age of Kings,” coverage of the Coronation in 1953,
and Alistair Cooke’s "Letter From America" in 1951. “Civilisation,” currently shown on 8.8. C.-l on Tuesdays, took two years to make. Its production team I travelled 80,000 miles and shot 200,000 feet of film. Eleven countries and 117 i locations were visited, and ; works in 118 museums and 18 libraries were shown. ! Made by the 8.8. C. Arts Features department. “Civilisation” has been bought for 'transmission in some 20 countries. The producers were Michael Gill and Peter Montagnon.
