In an attempt to foster better relations between Japan and Australia, Japanese tourist authorities have said that the necessity of visas for travel between the two countries might be abolished. The president of the Japanese shipping company, O.S.K. Lines, Ltd (Mr Hisao Fukuda), addressing the ninth Australia-Japan Business Co-operation Committee meeting in Canberra, said Japan now had mutual agreements with 28 nations to do away with short-term visas. The United States was considering abolishing visas for tourists of certain nationalities, he said. Of the 660,000 Japanese who went overseas annually, only 12,000 had visited Australia last year, Mr Fukuda said. He saw this as far from satisfactory.
