CANTERBURY DOG TRIALS
Separate even this year
The Canterbury championship dog trials, which will be held from Thursday
to Saturday this week at Beautiful Valley, about 14 miles inland from Geraldine, are being conducted this year as a separate event.
This is the first time that; this has been done, said the secretary of the Valley Collie Club (Mr G. P. Thomson), whose club is holding the championships. Normally, the championships were held in association with a club's own trials. This had meant that trials could continue for as long as five days, which sometimes gave championship competitors long waits before their runs, and kept them away from home longer than otherwise necessary. About 70 competitors from Kaikoura to Southland will take part in the trials, to be held on three courses on the property of Mr J. E. Mulvihill.
Mr Thomson said that his club was very pleased with the entries—B3 in the long head; 92 in the short head, drive and yard; and 63 in the zig-zag and straight huntaways. Both the huntaway classes will be held on the same course.
The Hilton-Gapes Valley Collie Club was formed in 1948. It had last held a championship about 1960, Mr Thomson said.
