Redlo Wairio pick

(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Redlo, the best staying three-year-old produced in Southland this season should add the $2OOO Wairio Cup at Riverton tomorrow to his score. A Kurdistan gelding from the non Stud Book family which produced the capable gallopers, Cassarook, Ballarook, Flying Trix and others, Redlo is trained by his partowner, E. A. Winsloe. Redlo is well fitted to win the Wairio Cup. He looked the unlucky runner when he finished second to Pole Star in the Riverton Cup in which he lost his position at a vital stage of the race—with 2J furlongs to run when his

stablemate, Somelight, stopped quickly and came back on him.

Redio made a spirited late dab to get up for second but Pole Star had the result in safe keeping at this stage. Redio confirmed his Riverton Cup placing when he was taken through to Riccarton to win a high-weight, no mean feat for a three-year-old.

Although she was beaten to sixth in heavy ground at Riverton at her last start, Bellaware’s form has been consistently good. She finished third in the Riverton Cup after making a game attempt to win all the way which was rather a searching test on the long Riverton straight On that form, however, she will have trouble matching Redlo. Atomic Flight ran a fair enough sixth in the Riverton Cup but he ran a much better race at his next start when he ran Decimal Coin to

a nose on heavy ground. Atomic Flight is a better stayer that most and he might be the one Redlo has to beat. Decimal Coin’s win was an upset but he is out-and-out mudlark and had conditions to suit him. If the ground became as heavy again he would be one of the stronger chances. The cup is the second leg of the T.A.B. double. The first leg will be on the Schenley Gin Handicap. The Riccarton winner, Shifnal King would be the one to beat if he got back into the field, in which he has the third right of re-entry. He was also paid up for in the Ohai Hack Handicap. Grey Pride, Robyn’s Lad and Miss Mellay have all raced well lately and they will be expected to dispute favouritism. The track has dried out since the Easter racing and the going will probably be dead.
