LOCO-SHED REPAIRS

About 23 fitters and other railway workers refused this week to work in the Linwood locomotive sheds until they had an assurance that the sheds were safe. Enginedrivers, firemen and cleaners are also refusing to enter the sheds. Other work has been found for the men, and maintenance staff began repair work in the sheds yesterday. Mr A. R. Batchelor, representing the Railway Tradesmen’s Association, said yesterday that complaints about the shed had been made a fortnight previously but no action had been taken at that time. The association understood that many of the . wooden columns in the sheds ’ were rotten, and there apr peared to be a danger of ’ heavy ventilation chutes fall- ; ing from rusty fastenings in : the roof.
