PULP AND CHIP
Mill plan for Coast (Frost Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, April 20. A pulp and chip mill on the West Coast, using the beech resources of the area, will be studied next week by a party led by the Director-General of Forests (Mr Thomson).
The party will include the chairman erf the Nature Conservation Council (Dr R. A. Falla), representatives of the Royal Forest and Bird Society, the conservators of forests for Nelson and West-
land, and other senior Forest Service officers. The conservator at Hokitika (Mr J. P. Bonisch) said the group would look at the possible areas to be worked; at the same time it will let the public know what will be reserved.
“To many people the word utilisation conjures up the idea that the area is to be laid to waste. In fact, this project would use only a small percentage of the available beech resources,” he said.
“We have in mind the utilisation of the beech in certain areas now, which I will not define at the moment.”
