Difference in tremors

(N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, April 20. The recent series of tremors at Mount Ruapehu had been significantly different from any previous recorded activity, said a D.S.I.R. scientist, Dr J. H. Latta, of Wellington, today. The tremors which preceded the hydro-thermal steam eruption on April 3 had been of unusually long duration, he said. There had always been a measure of volcanic activity evident on the seismograph at Mount Ruapehu, said Dr Latta. Minor eruptions had occurred in 1966, 1968 and 1969 followed by this month’s activity. However, before previous eruptions the preliminary activity had been much briefer than was the case this time.
