Art scheme successful

The council’s cultural committee reported to the Christchurch City Council on Monday evening that the student -on -section scheme at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, begun last year in association with the secondary division of the Christchurch Teachers’ College, was being continued with excellent results. Mrs J. Goldstein, a student on duty in the gallery, was conducting school parties through the gallery on organised time-tables. In addition, a number of other school groups were visiting the gallery under the guidance of their own teachers, the committee reported. A painting by Beatrice Partridge (1866-1963) entitled “The Taramakau River, 1898,” has been presented to the gallery by the family of the late Albert Moorehouse, 171 Knowles Street, Christchurch. It is a very early work by the Canterbury painter. The gallery has one other small example of her work. WATER COLOUR Cr W. V. Cowles has donated a water-colour print by the American artist, Norman Beale, famous for his paintings of historical buildings. The work depicts the Governor’s House, Sacramento, California.

The council approved the purchase of two works of the Christchurch potter, Nola Barron-—ceramic candlestick ($25) and ceramic sculptural form ($3O).

Both pieces are important examples of the work of the potter, who is not previously represented in the gallery’s collection.
