Education programme will be expanded

(N.Z. Press Association)

WASHINGTON, April 11.

“Sesame Street,” the widely-acclaimed American educational television programme for pre-school children, will be expanded to include learning programmes for adults, the United States Office of Education has announced.

The Education Office will increase its financial support for the programme from SUS2m to SUSBm a year, the Commissioner of Education (Mr S. Marland) said. "Sesame Street” is supported also by other Government agencies, and by private foundations. “Sesame Street,” broadcast on about 200 television stations, most of them noncommercial, is watched by

about seven million children. Emphasis is put on early childhood learning such as alphabet recognition and counting. “Our experience with ‘Sesame Street’ has given us a view of the great potential that educational television holds for our society, and we would like to expand with the new kind of programmes,” Mr Marland said.
