Try a poor-boy sandwich
The White Heron is thought by many Christchurch people to be strictly for expense accounts and overseas tourists, but in fact one can have a substantial meal there for about $1Admittedly, the diner who selects crayfish dishes in the Continental Restaurant and comes back for seconds can spend a good deal of money. Even so, the Continental claims it is no more expensive than any other top Christchurch restaurant, and it has no cover charge or hidden extras—such as the $1 a head for music charged by a competitor. The Hunt Room provides a quick, steak bar service in a more informal atmosphere, and specialises in American dishes such as chilli con came (a highlyseasoned beef stew), chicken pot pie (a chicken casserole with pastry on top) and the poor-boy sandwich (a giant cold sandwich made from about eight or nine inches of French loaf, and not especially cheap). It is open from
6.30 a.m. till 11 p.m. every day of the year. Grenadier Music six nights a week by the Denis Bryson Trio is provided at the Grenadier, 24 Oxford Terrace. Connoisseurs will enjoy the food and fine selection of wines in this restaurant, which is finished with an Old English decor. Reservations should be made by phoning 50-535. Guardsman Offering prime Angus steaks and chops cooked in front of patrons on a charcoal barbecue, the Guardsman at 103 Armagh Street also provides baked potatoes and tossed salad. All the steaks can be personally selected at the steak bar. Lager on tap and wine add the finishing touch, and the Guardsman does not require formal attire. Lodge On the north-east corner of Latimer Square, the Lodge is one of Chrlstchurch’s newer restaurants.
It features a businessman's three-course luncheon for $1.25, and has ample parking. Families are invited to “come as you are” on Sundays, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. At present the Lodge is being extended, and the management apologises for any temporary inconvenience. Malando A fully-licensed restaurant which has been operating in Christchurch for many years, the Malando, at 813 Colombo Street (north of the Square), offers a fine cuisine, wines, atmosphere and music. The Doug Caldwell Trio provides the music for listening or dancing every night from 8 p.m. Shanghai Next to the Canterbury Building Society in the Manchester Street • High Street triangle, the Shanghai Cafe serves grills and Chinese meals from 11.30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays, to 11 p.m. on Thursdays, and to 1 a.m. on Friday nights and Saturday nights.
