BURNSIDE MARKET

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 18. Values for oxen of all weights were up $3 a head on last week and cows and heifers remained firm at last week’s high levels at Burnside market this week. The quality of the yarding of 303 prime beef cattle was better than for several weeks. There w ere more cows than usual and most were of outstanding quality. There was a very attractive line of cattle from West Otago, which brought up to 8217. The quality of the 57 runners and vealers was good and values were up $4 a head. The store cattle yarding of 151 head was again of very mixed quality. There was a line of well-bred but not well-grown Hereford hiefers which would be suitable for breeding. These sold for |74.' Another pen of cows with calves sold for 868 all counted. In the pig section 105 were entered and while quality was good values remained unchanged. Some 350 lambs came forward. Quality was again very good and values improved 40c a head. There was a yarding of 2749 adult sheep, mostly of good quality. Values for hoggets began on a par with last week but eased as the sale progressed. In the final races they were down between 40c and 50c. Old ewes declined 20c. Values were:— Prime beef cattle.—Top oxen, 8180 to 8217; heavy, 8160 to 8175; medium. 8148 to 8157; light, 8130 to 8145. Top heifer, 8144; medium. 8120 to 130; light, $lOO to 8115. Top cow, 8133; medium, 8118 to 8125; light, 890 to 8112. Runners and vealers.—Vealers, 8105 to $113: medium, $BB to 8100; small, 860 to 872. Store cattle.—l B-months steers, 878 to $9O; small, $46 to $7O. 18-months heifers, 874. Cows and calves all counted, $6B. Pigs.—Top baconer, 835.50; medium. $29 to $3l. Top porker, $29.50; medium, $23 to $27; small, 815 to $l9. Lambs.—Top. $8.70; medium, $7.60 to $8; light. $5.80 to $6.20. Sbeep.—Top hogget, $8.50; medium, $7.60 to $7.90; light, $8.70 to $7. Top ewe, s£3o; medium, $3.40 to $3.80; light, $3 to $3.20.
