Aircraft order

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, March 18. Delta Airlines, one of the biggest customers for the Rolls-Royce powered Lockheed Tristar airliner, today announced it had ordered five DC-10 jets from the competing McDonnell-Douglas Company. The Delta purchase is the first by a Tristar customer and though Delta did not announce it was cancelling the Lockheed order, observers felt that the move might further jeopardise the already troubled Rolls-Royce-Tristar programme. A Delta statement said the airline had signed a letter of intent to purchase the Mc-Donnell-Douglas plane for competitive reasons. But it was still studying “long range solutions” to the Tristar, of which it has 24 on order.
