Defiant stand halts East-Shirley

Although the highest score of the day was J. W. Burtt’s 94, the Innings which most affected the result of the match at Burwood Park was that of J. A. Harrison. When he batted for 62 minutes his stubborn defence defied the attempts of the East Christ-church-Shiriey bowlers to dislodge him and capture the final St Alban’s wicket to win the match. At the end of the game he was unbeaten with his score at 0. Burtt was unfortunate to miss his century for he had batted with fine skill in attack and defence. The fifth-wicket partnership with B. D. Lark raised 89 runs in 78 minutes, and it was through Burtt’s aggressive apS roach that St Albans gained five atting bonus points.

V. Pollard bowled throughout i the innings with determination i and G. D. V. Pulley extracted I life from the pitch to take five wickets. Both bowlers were well i supported by safe catching. East Christchurch - Shirley scored briskly in the second innings. P. G. Coman, J. W. Grocott and P. R. Joyce all con- : tributed their share of runs and i made it possible for A. L. Andrew to declare with 158 minutes of play remaining. St Albans i accepted the challenge of 235 runs and scored the first 50 in 32 minutes. Then five wickets fell for 58 runs and Harrison began his last-ditch stand, ably assisted by P. M. Fazakarley in the last half hour. Andrew’s declaration proved to be nicely timed but East Christ-

i church-Shirley did not have the resources to support Pollard’s accurate bowling. He consistently attacked the batsman and finished the match with nine wickets. Again the fielding was excellent. Joyce added to his batting laurels by taking six catches in the match. Umpires: Messrs F. Fielding and E. B. Chisnall. EAST CHRISTCHURCH-SHIRLEY First Innings (290/9 dec.) Second innings P. G.
