Planes sink tanker

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—CopyrigM) CAPE TOWN, Mar. 12.

South African Air Force planes today sank the burning Liberian tanker Wafra 200 miles off Cape Agulhas, at Africa’s southern-most tip.

The Air Force had been ordered to sink the crippled vessel whose leaking cargo of 40,000 tons of oil had started polluting beaches. Propeller-driven bombers today moved in to sink the tanker after the failure of missile attacks by high-speed Buccaneer jets. The four-engine Shackletons, introduced in 1949 and now used for maritime reconnaissance, were called in last night to depth-charge the ship and resumed their depthcharge attacks at dawn today.
