Leading horticulturist 92 today
One of New Zealand’s foremost authorities on horticulture, Mr A. H. Shrubshall, will celebrate his ninety-second birthday today. Mr Shrubshall migrated to New Zealand from England about 1904, and became widely known in Christchurch and other parts for his expert knowledge of horticulture.
As a young man, he won two scholarships in one year for advanced studies in horticulture, spending them at the Essex School of Horticulture. He migrated to New Zealand a few days after he married, because of the limited opportunities available to him in England. In Christchurch, he was appointed manager of the firm of Buxtons, Ltd, which once had a nursery shop in Colombo Street. Later, he went into business in Colombo Street, and had a shop near Reece’s, Ltd, for 20 years. He retired from business to nurse his wife, who was ill. Mr and Mrs Shruoshall now live in Bowenvale Avenue.
They celebrated their sixty sixth wedding anniversary on February 6 last, Mrs Shrubshall, who is 88, said that living sensibly was the secret of their long life. They did not go in for special food, and worked well “wthout overdoing it”
