Container bans
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, March 12.
Watersiders at Auckland and Lyttelton have now imposed bans on containers handled by Alltrans, the major freight forwarding company in New Zealand. The action has been taken in support of a three-week-old ban by Wellington watersiders on consolidated containers.
A spokesman for Alltrans said today that the bans imposed at Auckland and Lyttelton would effectively put the company right out of the freight forwarding business, both in the coastal and Tasman container trades.
He said the Waterside Workers’ Union had given no reason why Alltrans Jiad been singled out.
There has been no new development in the Wellington ban, which arose when negotiations between watersiders and freight forwarders broke down over rates of pay in off-wharf consolidating depots.
The Minister of Labour (Mr Marshall) has suggested that any consolidating work done by watersiders should be done on the wharf, but harbour boards are opposed to this idea because it would mean extra expense to them.
