Butercci knocked out by Wulf
(By our boxing reporter)
Eddie Wulf, the Auckland professional boxer, had the easiest bout of his career last evening when he won $3OO by knocking out Giuseppe Butercci, of Melbourne, in the third round.
Butercci boxed like a novice. He kept his hands low, had his left wrist curled in a manner that prevented him delivering a straight left, and was completely outclassed. He was ousted quicker! than Gorton. The Italian-born boxer claimed he was rated the third best light heavy-weight in Australia, and will get a chance to win the title when he returns to Australia. If that is so, the big, bad Wulf should go to Australia immediately.
A crowd of 700 saw a dull first round with the outstanding feature the need for the referee (Mr N. Fisher) to ask the boxers to break on five occasions. Light
blows were exchanged, Wulf being a point in front.
Wulf put more snap into his punches in the second round, and scored with nine, good straight lefts all on Butercci's nose—badly bent from previous bouts.
Butercci was slow and ponder* ous, and missed badly with two wild swings. He had his gloves hanging low, and was warned by Mr Fisher for holding. Wulf hit him twice on the nose with stinging left hooks.
Wulf, who stands square on to his opponents, continued to pepper Butercci with lefts to the face at the opening of the third round. Everyone in Canterbury Court—except Butercci apparently—knew that Wulf was setting him up for a right cross. It connected beautifully with the side of Butercci’s jaw—a good clean hit. Wulf hit Butercci with a light left hook as he fell sideways from the impact, then punched him hard with a left rip to the body. Butercci staggered to the ropes, and knelt on the bottom one, with head and arms across
the top one, as he was counted out.
AMATEUR BOUTS Some very young contestants fought the eight amateur bouts. R. Green and J. Phillips fought a rousing three-rounder, that had the crowd cheering. Both have a good knowledge of boxing, Green using the ring well and his straight was the deciding factor.
The judges were Messrs C. Knowles, M. V. Drury, S. C. Ashton and H. Shields, and Messrs Drury and Shields referred.
