Vila welcomes Prince Philip

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) VILA (New Hebrides),

March 11

The Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Vila today, and commented good-humouredly on the “change of protocol” he had found in the BritishFrench condominium.

“When I saw a picture of the Queen on the wall, I expected to see myself beside her,” he told the crowd. "Instead, I saw President Pompidou. I shall have to speak severely to the Queen on my return.”

The entire population of Vila, the capital of the condominium, had come out to meet the Duke as he came ashore from the Royal Yacht Britannnia.

He was greeted by the cheers of 2000 people clinging to rocks on the foreshore in a steady drizzle of rain.

The Duke inspected French and British police officers and Boy Scouts, chatting with many of them in fluent French. Later he visited the local British secondary school and British ex-servicemen’s club.
