MODULE MODEL

The United States Government will present to Christchurch a full-size model of the lunar landing module of the Apollo moonship, and the 10-ton model is expected to arrive towards the end of this year. The president of the Ferrymead Trust (Mr G. L. Evans) reported this when the trust sought increased grants at a meeting of Christchurch metropolitan local body representatives yesterday. Mr Evans said that there were only six of the models in the world. A dome-shaped building to house the module would cost $25,000. Mr Evans and Mr S. H. Wood, chairman of the Ferrymead Museum of Science and Industry Society, outlined the programme of the trust for the next two years. The No. 1 museum building was estimated to cost $60,000 over the two years, roading $BOOO and filling $3OOO. Mr Wood said that a road to link a 70-acre freehold site acquired by the trust, about half a mile away from the present site by the river, was planned. The two sites would also be linked by a tramway and railway. Local bodies got tremendous value for their money because of the very high degree of voluntary labour that went into projects. To questions, Messrs Wood and Evans said that contributions this year from local bodies amounted to $14,000. The trust had asked the meeting last year for a total grant of $20,000. Representatives agreed to recommend to their councils a total grant of $25,000, contributed according to population.
