Pollution of Avon

Black ash from a faulty boiler yesterday caused minor pollution in the Avon River. The ash flowed into the river for about an hour and a half through a stormwater drain opposite the Antigua boatsheds.

The chief engineer of the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr P. J. McWilliam) said the source of the ash had been traced and its discharge into the drain was found to be accidental. Last week an unidentified white liquid fouled the river from the same drain. “It looked as though someone was pouring hundreds of gallons of milk into the river,” said one of the proprietors of the boatsheds. Trade waste inspectors at the time were unable to trace the source of the liquid.
