Minister chided for remarks

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, March 11.

The Minister of Marine (Mr McCready) was criticised in Parliament today for recent remarks about maritime unions wrecking the shipping industry and the Union Steam Ship Company take-over.

Mr P. Reweti (Lab., Eastern Maori) said it was a pity such a declaration should have come from the Minister.

“I would have thought that he would have been one to engender some human relations between the unions and the shipowners,” Mr Reweti said.

Surely it was Mr McCready’s job to find ways which would enable New Zealand to acquire its own shipping line. “Has he no consideration

for Mr Owens (chairman of R.A.O. Holdings), who is trying to establish his own line,” he said. “Surely there is an onus on the Government to assist one of our own people who is trying to establish a shipping line.” Mr Reweti said that Australia should not be allowed to take over the company without a fight. “It is enough that the country has taken the One Ton Cup, without her taking the Union Steam Ship Company’s ships as well,” Mr Reweti said.
