Wingatui gallopers seeking third successive wins

“The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. Queen Mellay won so impressively at the Cromwell meeting that the Mellay filly should make it three successive wins in the Benson and Hedges Hack Handicap, the $l5OO mile event and first leg of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double tomorrow.

Both races were over seven furlongs but from the manner in which she ran on at the finish the extra furlong will be well within her reach. No Defence, the top-weight, will also be trying for his

third successive win. His two success were over a mile at Wingatui last month and he showed his class by the manner in which he outstayed, the opposition. Lady Maru won her second race in her last four starts at the Banks . Peninsula meeting last Saturday and the

easy manner in which she accomplished her task en- : hances her prospects. Centre Gallery might make amends fpr her failure at her last start at Wingatui. Her earlier form was most impressive with a win and a close second at Riccarton. i. Rebel Robe followed consistent placings with fine win at Wingatui ksst month and Mrs Castle outclassed the-opposition in tl}e highweight event at MOtukarara on Saturday. , Never In Doubt was a winner three starts back at Gore but his mere recent races have not been in keeping with that effort. ’ Ali Cat and Kurcharte are recent winners but for a light-weight prospect Stanley Girl makes more appeal. Her runaway win at Gore and her good third at Wingatui in her two starts to date were most promising.

Solar Flight, one of the last crop of Summertime and the well-bred Central Flight, is the likely favourite in the South Island Futurity Stakes, the feature $4OOO event for two-year-olds and the second leg of the double. The colt has improved with time and at his last start he showed his potential by beating Tourie and Smart Mellay over five furlongs at Wingatui last month. Tourie won the Southland Breeders Stakes at Invercargill in November, and since then has been racing particularly soundly. Smart Mellay has been most consistent and has failed to weigh in only once in eight starts. That was when she was injured during the running. One of her best efforts was at the Hororata meeting at Riccarton when she beat Awocato.

At Invercargill at the New Year meeting she easily accounted for Caledonian Lass, which since then has won two races.

Anui was most impressive in winning at her first start at Gore, but at her next and latest appearance she was beaten by track conditions. She should run well tomorrow.
