Change of plans
"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. There is a strong possibility that Beau Sovereign, considered a doubtful starter early in the week, will contest the W’akefield Challenge Stakes at Trentham tomorrow. Beau Sovereign missed a gallop on Tuesday when he began to cough as he walked on to the track, and his trainer, M. Ritchie, felt he would be unable to start. Lack of transport forced Ritchie to stay at Trentham, however, and by yesterday morning the colt’s cold seemed to have cleared up. He was fit to gallop and in the hands of G. F. Hughes lie joined Richman (Marsh) for the last four of six furlongs in 50 4-ssec, the final three in 37 l-ssec.
Richman had an early lead of a length or more, but Beau Sovereign made that up in a few strides when Hughes asked him and finished on terms with the older horse. Blank Cheque, which started the six with Richman, lost ground when he dived round a flag and tailed off.
Beau Sovereign appeared to pull up well and was later to be examined by a veterinarian. Ritchie said he would confer again with the Auckland owner. Mr H. E. Stokes, before a decision was made, but he would recommend that the colt start.
“It looks a pretty good chance that he will/' Ritchie said.
