Water polo award
M. C. Scott, who this year captained Canterbury to its first national waterpolo championship in 18 years, is the first “Player of the Year” for his sport. Scott became the first recipient of the Southern Cross Trophy when he was presented with it by Mr A. L. Reddiford, an executive of Ballin’s Industries, Ltd, at the Southern Cross Hotel last evening. He was chosen by a selection panel consisting of the Canterbury coach, Mr E. Tuyan the country’s senior referee, Mr J. den Haan; and the waterpolo reporter of “The Press.” B. G. Spear, the New Zealand goalie and Canterbury vice-captain, ; who is also chairman 1 and secretary of the Canterbury board, was 1 the runner-up. Scott captains and coaches J Beckenham - Sockburn, j this season’s local chain- , pion and runner-up in , the Ryan Cup national inter-club championship. ( He also assisted Mr < Tuyan to coach both the , Canterbury senior and ; under-21 teams—first and second respectively . in the national tourna- : ments.
