Support for board

Full support for Canterbury Education Board attempts to get the school maintenance grant from the Government increased by 25 per cent next year, was given by the Canterbury School Committee’s Association on Wednesday evening. The board’s superintendent of works (Mr G. Hales) had earlier told the association the board had had to cut back expenditure this year by 840.000 to $366,000. Next year the cut-back would be from $70,000 to $90,000. he said. Mr Hales said the maintenance grant of 16c per square foot of primary school buildings had not been changed since 1965, and the estimated overall costs had risen 25 per cent. “We are over-committed by a very great amount—we are now well in the red. We are finding it a great struggle to keep up with costs. We have to keep deferring works, and the backlog now is getting too much to cope with.”

Mr Hales said an increase of 2c per square foot in the grant would be a considerable help.
