Miners make good gains in moderate trading

Mining stocks made good gains in moderate trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. However, profit takers were active and leading uraniums, heavyweights and some speculatives eased from the day’s peak levels. Oils and industrials were firm with generally marginal moves in moderate trading. ! Although the volume was not high, enthusiam and con- ■ fidence seemed to be slowly i returning.

Selected speculatives did well, and the heavyweights continued their slow but regular recovery. The Melbourne metals and minerals index made an excellent advance of 23 points from 734.96 to 575.46. Poseidon firmed 150 c to 4150 c. Western Mining put on a further 7c to 487 c, and the rights advanced 13c to 335 c. Oils were firm and steady. Timor firmed a further 7c to 58c. Ampol Ex put on 2c to 118 c, and Woodside made a

good recovery with a rise of 7c to 48c. Industrials were steady with marginal moves in moderate trading. B.H.P. dropped 10c to 1395 c and Comalco shed 15c to 420 c.
