Pit Stops
A free formula race carrying about $lOO,OOO in prize money is to be held at the British Brands Hatch circuit in August, 1872. The entry is likely to include Formula I, Formula 5000 Can-Am, prototype, and sports-racing cars. About 100 entries are expected, and there will be three days of trials to decide the 30 who will start the 500-kilometre - race. The winner will get $40,000, the last car to finish $lOOO, and there will be a $lO,OOO race for the second 30 fastest cars. Some makers plan to build special cars for the race, which is being sponsored by Rothmans and the Motor Circuit Development company. It will be the richest race to be run in Europe. * *
More than 100 entries have been received for the Pukekohe race meeting this Sunday, when Bank of New South Wales saloon championship and national touring-car championship events will be run. The Wales championship is clearly led by P. Fahey, J. Richards has a 12-point lead in the 1001-4200 c.c. touring car title, and R. Collingwood leads the 0 to 1000 c.c. section by eight points from B. Phillips. * >k *
M. Hailwood will drive a Formula 5000 car for the Surtees team this season, and he may also make some Formula I appearances.
The new BRM Grand Prix car is powered by a new version of the BRM Vl2 engine, and the car itself is wider and lower than before, although based largely on last year’s comparatively successful car. * * *
The Swedish Rally, which was the second event in the 1971 European championship, was won by the Swedish driver S. Blomqvist in a Saab V 4, with a BMW 2002 second. A Lancia was third. * $ *
Some details have been released overseas of the new flat-16 Porsche engine which will be fitted to the Porsche 917 car. The 5litre unit is said to produce 690 b.h.p. at 9200 r.p.m., and has two sparkplugs a cylinder.
