Deaths on the road
A Nuie Islander was killed when the car in which he was a passenger left the road in Invercargill about 8.30 p.m. on Saturday. The driver, his nephew, was treated at Kew Hospital for minor injuries, reports the Press Association.
The man killed was Heml Ikitu Lamatoa, aged 40, a slaughterman.
The driver was Mr T. Fasi. Both lived at 281 Conon Street, Invercargill. A youth was killed and his pillion passenger injured when his motor-cycle struck a road sign at the intersection of Rangiora and Koro-
miko Avenues, Palmerston North on Saturday. He was Ross Delwyn Cannon, aged 18, of Palmerston North.
Mr Cannon and his passenger, Miss K. Butcher, aged 16, were taken to the Palmerston North Hospital. Mr Cannon died two hours later. Miss Butcher’s condition is satisfactory. A young girl was killed when she was struck by a car at Waipu Cove, North Auckland on Saturday afternoon. She was Janet Glennys Augustine Wingerden, aged eight, daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Wingerden, of Waipu Cove.
