SHIP’S HEAD MISSING

AUCKLAND, Feb. 28.
A souvenir hunter has stolen the figure-head of the wrecked barque Endeavour 11, says the ship’s owner, Mr R. C. Craig, a Canadian.
“It was brought ashore and has since gone missing. I am very disturbed about it,” he said. The figure-head depicted the Count of Monte Cristo. The Endeavour II was launched under the name Monte Cristo at Vancourver in 1968.
The ship has now completely broken up, and the stern section is about a mile and a half from the rest of the wreck.
The police were called after he found the ship’s figure-head had been taken from where It had been placed for safety, Mr Craig said.
Mr Craig will remain in New Zealand to see if he can build a new ship. He has sent for the plans of the Endeavour 11, and hopes to use kauri and other New Zealand woods. He says he Is getting financial support from New Zealand, Australia, the United States and Canada.
