Garden of Allah now officially in N.Z.
People are likely to come home from their next holidays bragging that they have been to the Garden of Allah, Satan Saddle, Gunboat Creek, Hells Gate or Darkey Jim’s Bush. Take them seriously. Such places do exist and there are official records to prove it.
The New Zealand Gazette lists these names and many others in Canterbury and Westland which have just been approved by the New Zealand Geographic Board. They are official from today. One will find the Garden of Allah in an icefield at the head of the Adams River in Westland. Gunboat Creek joins Cron Creek as a tributary of the Haast River. Satan Saddle is the pass between Snow Peak and Mount Lambert. Hells Gates is a feature in the headwaters area of the Lawrence River. Darkey Jim’s Bush is in the area on the eastern side of the Havelock River opposite the junction with the Forbes River. But the curiosities do not end with these. Others include Crikey Creek, near the mouth of the Haast River, Lame Duck Flat, the area near the headwaters of the Karangarua River; Roaring Swine Creek, a small tributary of the Haast River opposite Mark Bluff; Argument
Creek, a western tributary of the Clyde River, Mistake Basin, an area at the head of Mistake Creek; Tobacco Range, a range extending west from the Birdwood Range; and Bloody Point, on the eastern side of the Godley River.
