Four country tennis wins

Country tennis teams had considerable success against town teams In the annual fixture at Wilding Park on Saturday. Country can nearly always win two of the six contests, sometimes three, but this time scored In tour. Town was not weU supported by its senior men players and this weakened the teams so that Mid-Canterbury, Malvern, Ellesmere and North Canterbury were all able to win. Banks Peninsula and Hurunul were beaten. Altogether 240 players from throughout Canterbury took part Senior teams of six men and six women from each of the subassoclatlons and junior teams of four boys and four girls met similar teams from town. Last year three country teams won in the senior section and only two the previous year. Some of the meetings were extremely close, none more than that between Town and Malvern In which each won 12 matches and Malvern won by 192 games to 176. Four country players won top singles. One of the most creditable victories was by the Malvern man, A. Hewitt, who has been one of the finest countiy players for many years. This time Hewitt beat J. Martin, many times a Canterbury representative and Wilding Shield player by 9 games to 3. Hewitt places the ball cleverly and Martin made too many errors to cope with his tactics.

W. G. Lewthwaite, of Banks Peninsula, another who has represented his sub-association for many years but who also plays for the United club in Christchurch, beat T. Mooney by 9 games to 5. The red-headed, hard-hitter from North Canterbury, J. Allin, beat C. Wood, of the Edgeware club by 9 matches to 4, and Miss J.
