Find of rare rock
A good find of a rare type of rock found in only two other places in the world has been achieved at Karamea. The two-ton boulder of orbicular granite is the largest piece of the mineral that has been found at Karamea, although it has also been found in considerable’quantities in Finland and in the Antarctic.
Mr A. K. Brown, of Christchurch, who was present when the boulder was found, said yesterday that the rock was much in demand by rock collectors who polished it up to make it very attractive. “As far as rockhounds are concerned it’s almost priceless stuff—it’s so hard to get.” Mr Brown said the rock was found in a stream on Mr J. Hare’s property, about a mile upriver from the Arapito Valley Road. The find was made by Mr J. Lineham, who has shared the'rock with Mr Hare.
Sharing was made easy as the boulder split in half when being pushed out by a bulldozer.
