MARRIAGE FIGURES
More civil weddings
Marriages in Christchurch this month have dropped by almost half on figures for February last year. At the same time the number of office weddings has increased. The number of marriage notices given by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Mr R. A. Aitken) for February last year totalled 316. Of these, 49 were office marriages. This year only 182 marriage licences were issued and 62 of the wedfiings were held in the Registry office. So far this year there have been 529 notices of marriages given, and 111 office weddings. To date last year there were 568 notices of marriage and only 88 registry weddings. Although the number of births fell this month —439 (467) —the number of births to date this year exceeded the number to date at the same time last year—looo (984). There were fewer deaths this month than in February last year—l 47 (187) —and so far this year there have been fewer deaths than to the same time last year—--335 (365).
