Control of surfers
Sir, —Your recent editorial on the subject of special zones for surfboard users was most timely, especially in view of the numbers of swimmers who have suffered (unrecorded) hurts or nearmisses this summer. Aftei the schools had reopened and there were no week-day patrols, I was swimming with the crowd confined in the area that had earlier been marked by flags to the north of the Waimairi pavilion Suddenly a surf canoe minus its rider came hurtling down on to me from the top of a breaking wage. As things turned out I emerged less bruised and shocked than my companion. When the young woman who had been in charge of the surf canoe was approached she said she was quite entitled to be in (he area because there were no flags up. Further observation leads me to the conclusion that she is far from being the only one to hold this view.— Yours, etc., G. A. February 25, 1971.
